Moringa and Norethindrone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Norethindrone

Norethindrone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Moringa interacts with.

Theoretically, moringa might increase or decrease levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some in vitro research suggests that moringa inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). However, other in vitro research suggests that moringa extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes. A pharmacokinetic study in patients with HIV shows no change in the pharmacokinetics of nevirapine, which is partially metabolized by CYP3A4, when administered concomitantly with moringa leaf powder 1.85 grams daily for 14 days.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with moringa and norethindrone. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down norethindrone, and lab studies suggest moringa might nudge that enzyme one way or the other. The catch is that the test-tube research pulls in both directions: some hints that moringa slows the enzyme (which could let more norethindrone build up), and some hints it speeds it up (which could lower your levels). We honestly can't say which would win in a real person.

Why it matters most here: if your norethindrone is being used for birth control or to control bleeding, lower levels could mean breakthrough bleeding or reduced protection, while higher levels could mean more nausea, breast tenderness, or mood changes. This is all theoretical and based on lab studies only, not strong human evidence, so don't panic. Just mention to your pharmacist or doctor that you're using moringa before relying on it.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Norethindrone page

“Norethindrone is a progestin used for birth control and for heavy or irregular periods, which means a supplement that quietly weakens it can end in an unplanned pregnancy, so I read this list with genuine caution. Three of the 152 ingredients on it rate major.”

About Moringa

What is Moringa?

  • Nutritional supplement
  • Blood sugar support
  • Cholesterol support
  • Inflammation
  • Skin conditions

Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.

About Norethindrone

What Is Norethindrone Used For?

Brand names: Aygestin, Norlutin, Nor-QD, Micronor, Norlutate, Camila, Errin, Jolivette, Nora-BE

Norethindrone is a progestin-only oral contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. It is taken every day, continuously, without hormone-free breaks — unlike combination birth control pills.

Gallifrey (norethindrone acetate tablets, 5 mg) is a different, higher-dose formulation approved for three additional conditions: secondary amenorrhea (periods that have stopped), endometriosis, and abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance when no structural cause such as fibroids or uterine cancer is present. Gallifrey is not approved or recommended for use alongside estrogen therapy in postmenopausal women for endometrial protection.
