Moringa and Oxybutynin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Oxybutynin

Oxybutynin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Moringa interacts with.

Theoretically, moringa might increase or decrease levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some in vitro research suggests that moringa inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). However, other in vitro research suggests that moringa extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes. A pharmacokinetic study in patients with HIV shows no change in the pharmacokinetics of nevirapine, which is partially metabolized by CYP3A4, when administered concomitantly with moringa leaf powder 1.85 grams daily for 14 days.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the deal with moringa and oxybutynin. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break oxybutynin down. Moringa has shown mixed signals in lab studies, with some hinting it might slow this enzyme and others suggesting it speeds it up. Honestly, the evidence is thin and only comes from test-tube and animal work, so we can't even say for sure which direction it goes.

If moringa slowed the enzyme, oxybutynin could build up a bit, meaning more dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, or drowsiness. If it sped things up, the drug might work less well for your bladder. In a real human study with another medication, nothing actually changed. Culinary amounts in food are very unlikely to matter, but concentrated supplements are worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

“Oxybutynin (Ditropan, Oxytrol, Gelnique) is an anticholinergic for overactive bladder, and its supplement interactions deserve genuine care rather than a quick skim. Most of the list comes down to drug levels: grapefruit juice can push oxybutynin higher and intensify its side effects, while St.”

About Moringa

What is Moringa?

  • Nutritional supplement
  • Blood sugar support
  • Cholesterol support
  • Inflammation
  • Skin conditions

Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.

Oxytrol is approved for overactive bladder in men; Oxytrol for Women is approved for overactive bladder in women aged 18 and older.

Extended-release tablets (Oxybutynin Chloride) are also approved for children 6 years and older who have bladder overactivity caused by a neurological condition, such as spina bifida. Immediate-release tablets and oral solution (Oxybutynin Chloride) are indicated for bladder instability symptoms — including urgency, frequency, urinary leakage, and painful urination — in patients with neurogenic bladder conditions.
