Moringa and Insulin Degludec

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin Degludec

Insulin Degludec falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Moringa interacts with.

Theoretically, moringa might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs; however, research is conflicting.
Animal research shows that moringa can lower blood glucose levels. However, research in humans has not shown consistent blood glucose lowering effects.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with moringa and your Tresiba (insulin degludec): moringa may have a mild blood sugar lowering effect of its own. When you stack that on top of a long-acting insulin that's already doing the heavy lifting, the two could add together and nudge your numbers a little lower than expected. In theory, that raises the chance of a low blood sugar episode (shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion).

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. The strong blood sugar drops were mostly seen in animal studies, and human results have been all over the map, so this is a fairly weak, theoretical concern. Food amounts of moringa leaf are unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using concentrated supplement doses, just check your sugars more closely at first and loop in your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin Degludec page

“Insulin degludec (Tresiba) is a long-acting insulin meant to hold blood sugar steady around the clock, which means anything else that pushes glucose down can push it too far. That is the story for nearly all 239 ingredients on this page, and the list warrants genuine caution.”

About Moringa

What is Moringa?

  • Nutritional supplement
  • Blood sugar support
  • Cholesterol support
  • Inflammation
  • Skin conditions

Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.
