Moringa and Insulin Glargine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin Glargine

Insulin Glargine falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Moringa interacts with.

Theoretically, moringa might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs; however, research is conflicting.
Animal research shows that moringa can lower blood glucose levels. However, research in humans has not shown consistent blood glucose lowering effects.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: moringa may, in theory, nudge your blood sugar a little lower on its own. Insulin glargine (Basaglar, Semglee, Lusduna) already lowers blood sugar, so stacking the two could in principle add up and push you closer to a low. With insulin, a low (hypoglycemia) can show up as shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, confusion, or hunger.

That said, I want to be honest about the evidence. The blood-sugar effect of moringa is strong in animal studies but inconsistent in people, and this interaction is rated as minor. Small amounts of moringa in food are unlikely to cause trouble. If you take concentrated moringa supplements regularly, check your glucose a bit more closely and chat with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Moringa

What is Moringa?

  • Nutritional supplement
  • Blood sugar support
  • Cholesterol support
  • Inflammation
  • Skin conditions

Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.
