Moringa and Sitagliptin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Sitagliptin

Sitagliptin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Moringa interacts with.

Theoretically, moringa might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs; however, research is conflicting.
Animal research shows that moringa can lower blood glucose levels. However, research in humans has not shown consistent blood glucose lowering effects.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: moringa may have a mild blood sugar lowering effect of its own. So if you take it alongside sitagliptin (Januvia), the two could in theory add up and push your numbers lower than expected. Sitagliptin already works by helping your body release more of its own blood sugar lowering signals, so stacking another glucose lowering helper on top is the main thing to keep an eye on.

That said, this is a minor, mostly theoretical concern. Animal studies show a sugar lowering effect, but human results have been inconsistent, and the food amounts in cooking are unlikely to matter much. Watch for signs of low blood sugar like shakiness, sweating, or dizziness, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a concentrated moringa supplement.

About Moringa

What is Moringa?

  • Nutritional supplement
  • Blood sugar support
  • Cholesterol support
  • Inflammation
  • Skin conditions

Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.

About Sitagliptin

What Is Sitagliptin Used For?

Brand names: Januvia, Zituvio

Sitagliptin is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is available as tablets (Januvia, Zituvio, and generic sitagliptin products) and as an oral solution (Brynovin), all approved for this same use.

Sitagliptin is not for type 1 diabetes. It has not been studied in people with a history of pancreatitis, so its safety in that group is unknown.
