Moringa and Erythromycin, Sulfisoxazole

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Moringa interacts with whole categories of medication. Erythromycin, Sulfisoxazole falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Moringa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Erythromycin, Sulfisoxazole

Erythromycin, Sulfisoxazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Moringa interacts with.

Theoretically, moringa might increase or decrease levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some in vitro research suggests that moringa inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). However, other in vitro research suggests that moringa extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes. A pharmacokinetic study in patients with HIV shows no change in the pharmacokinetics of nevirapine, which is partially metabolized by CYP3A4, when administered concomitantly with moringa leaf powder 1.85 grams daily for 14 days.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with Eryzole, which combines erythromycin and sulfisoxazole. The erythromycin part is handled by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, the same pathway moringa may tinker with. The catch is that lab studies pull in opposite directions: some suggest moringa blocks this enzyme (which could let erythromycin build up and raise the odds of stomach upset, nausea, or in rare cases heart rhythm changes), while others suggest it speeds it up (which could weaken the antibiotic's punch). Erythromycin is the active drug here, not a prodrug, so it works as taken.

Honestly, this is theoretical and based only on test-tube and animal data, and a human study showed no real effect. Food amounts of moringa are very unlikely to matter, but check with your pharmacist before using concentrated supplements alongside this antibiotic.

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Erythromycin, Sulfisoxazole also falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, moringa leaf extract might increase the levels and clinical effects of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro research shows that moringa leaf extract inhibits renal P-glycoprotein transport activity. So far, this reaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the simple version: your combo product Eryzole pairs erythromycin with sulfisoxazole, an antibiotic team usually given for ear infections. Erythromycin is one of those drugs handled by a little cellular pump called P-glycoprotein, which helps move it through your body. In a lab dish, moringa leaf extract slowed that pump down. In theory, that could let a bit more erythromycin hang around, which might mean more of its usual side effects like upset stomach, nausea, cramping, or loose stools.

The important caveat: this has only been seen in test-tube and animal studies, never reported in real people, so it's far from proven. Food amounts of moringa are unlikely to matter, but before starting a concentrated moringa supplement, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Erythromycin, Sulfisoxazole page

“Eryzole combines two antibiotics, erythromycin and sulfisoxazole, and its supplement list calls for genuine care, especially the small set of major-rated pairings. Erythromycin interferes with a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and nearly half of the flagged ingredients travel that same pathway, so levels can swing in ways that matter.”

About Moringa

What is Moringa?

  • Nutritional supplement
  • Blood sugar support
  • Cholesterol support
  • Inflammation
  • Skin conditions

Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.
