Moringa + Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol
Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol brand names: Yasmin, Gianvi, Angeliq.
Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 3 drug categories that Moringa can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, moringa might increase or decrease levels of CYP3A4 substrates.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Moringa interacts with whole categories of medication. Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Moringa in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
1 of 3Why this applies to Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol
Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Moringa interacts with.
Some in vitro research suggests that moringa inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). However, other in vitro research suggests that moringa extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes. A pharmacokinetic study in patients with HIV shows no change in the pharmacokinetics of nevirapine, which is partially metabolized by CYP3A4, when administered concomitantly with moringa leaf powder 1.85 grams daily for 14 days.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your birth control pill, Yasmin (drospirenone with ethinyl estradiol), is partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Moringa might nudge that enzyme one way or the other, but honestly the evidence here is shaky. It comes only from lab and test-tube studies, and they even point in opposite directions, with some suggesting moringa slows the enzyme and others suggesting it speeds it up.
Why this matters: anything that speeds up that enzyme could lower your hormone levels and, in theory, make the pill a bit less reliable at preventing pregnancy or cause breakthrough spotting. Food amounts of moringa in cooking are very unlikely to do much. Concentrated supplement doses are less studied. I wouldn't panic, but please check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting a moringa supplement.

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that moringa leaf extract inhibits renal P-glycoprotein transport activity. So far, this reaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with your birth control pill (Yasmin and similar combine drospirenone with ethinyl estradiol). Lab studies suggest moringa leaf extract may block a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which helps move certain medications around and out of the body. In theory, slowing that pump could nudge your hormone levels a bit higher. With these pills, that might mean slightly more of the usual side effects, like breast tenderness, nausea, headache, or bloating.
I want to be honest, though: this is based only on test-tube and animal research, and it has never actually been reported in people. Eating moringa as a food is very unlikely to matter. If you're using concentrated moringa supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
3 of 3Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that moringa extract induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your birth control pill (Yasmin, Gianvi, and similar) contains drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol, two hormones that your liver gradually breaks down. Lab studies suggest moringa may speed up one of those liver enzymes (CYP1A2). In theory, that could clear the estrogen out of your body a little faster, which might lower your hormone levels slightly.
Here's the honest part: this is only seen in test-tube research, not in real people, and it's rated as a minor concern. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, because even small drops in hormone levels could in theory make a pill less reliable, I'd mention any regular moringa supplement to your pharmacist or doctor. Food-amount sprinkles in cooking are far less likely to matter than concentrated capsules.

About Moringa
What is Moringa?
- Nutritional supplement
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol support
- Inflammation
- Skin conditions
Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.
