Ticlopidine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS — the group Oolong Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in oolong tea.
Oolong tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2),. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the clearance rate of caffeine from oolong tea and increase caffeine levels.

Here's a twist worth knowing: in this pairing, it's not your Ticlopidine that builds up, it's the caffeine in your oolong tea. Ticlopidine can block a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is the same enzyme your body uses to clear caffeine. When that pathway slows down, caffeine sticks around longer than usual.

Practically, that could mean the cup of tea you normally tolerate hits harder: more jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling restless. Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how the drug works, not strong real-world data, so don't panic. If you notice you're wired after your usual tea, simply ease back on the caffeine and mention it to your pharmacist or doctor. Don't change your Ticlopidine on your own.

Oolong tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, the caffeine in oolong tea might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: ticlopidine already works by keeping your platelets from clumping together, which is exactly how it helps prevent clots and strokes. Oolong tea brings caffeine to the table, and caffeine is thought to have its own mild platelet-slowing effect. Put the two together and, in theory, you could nudge your bleeding risk up a little. Realistically that might show up as easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or cuts that take longer to stop.

The important part: this is only a theoretical concern based on lab data, and it has not actually been reported in people. A cup or two of oolong tea is very different from concentrated caffeine pills. Don't change anything on your own, but do mention your tea habit to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye out.

Here the twist is that we are really watching the tea, not the medicine. Lab studies hint that ticlopidine can slow down how your body breaks apart the caffeine in oolong tea. If that happens, the caffeine could linger a bit longer and feel stronger, so you might notice things like jitters, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling on edge.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube work and has not actually been seen in real people, so for most folks a cup or two of oolong is unlikely to cause trouble. If you drink a lot of caffeine or feel extra wired, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Ticlopidine Used For?

Brand names: Ticlid, Ticlopidine

  • Ticlopidine is used to reduce the risk of stroke in people who have had a stroke or have had warning signs of a stroke and who cannot be treated with aspirin. Ticlopidine is also used along with aspirin to prevent blood clots from forming in coronary stents (metal tubes surgically placed in clogged blood vessels to improve blood flow). It works by preventing platelets (a type of blood cell) from collecting and forming clots.
