Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Avandamet combines two diabetes medicines, metformin and rosiglitazone, that work to lower your blood sugar. The concern here isn't about oolong tea changing how these drugs are broken down. Instead, it's the caffeine in the tea that may have its own small, unpredictable effect on your blood sugar. Reports are mixed, with caffeine sometimes nudging glucose up and sometimes down.

Honestly, this is a minor and theoretical concern, and a cup or two of oolong tea is unlikely to throw off your control. If you drink a lot of tea or take concentrated caffeine supplements, just keep an eye on your readings and watch for shaky, sweaty low-sugar feelings. Chat with your pharmacist before making any changes.

About Oolong Tea

What is Oolong Tea?

  • Weight management
  • Mental alertness and energy
  • Heart health
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antioxidant support

Oolong tea is a traditional partially oxidized tea made from the same plant as green and black tea, and it provides caffeine and plant antioxidants. As a beverage it is generally considered safe for most healthy adults in moderate amounts, but evidence for specific health benefits like weight loss or blood sugar control is limited. If you have heart, blood pressure, or caffeine-sensitivity concerns, talk with your pharmacist or doctor.
