These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Padang Cassia interacts with whole categories of medication. Lovastatin falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Padang Cassia in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Lovastatin
Lovastatin falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know about this pairing: it isn't about cinnamon changing how lovastatin works in your body. It's about both being a bit hard on your liver. Lovastatin can occasionally raise liver enzymes on its own, and concentrated cassia cinnamon (including Padang cassia) contains coumarin, which in large supplement doses has been linked to liver irritation that usually clears up once it's stopped.
Stacking two liver stressors is the worry, especially if you already have liver issues. To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how coumarin behaves, not proven cases with lovastatin. Cinnamon sprinkled on food is no problem. Before starting a concentrated cinnamon capsule, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Lovastatin also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with lovastatin and Padang cassia. Your liver relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear lovastatin out of your system. In lab dish studies, an extract of this cinnamon slowed that same enzyme down. If that were to happen in real life, lovastatin could linger longer and build up, which can raise the odds of statin side effects like muscle aches, weakness, or, rarely, more serious muscle breakdown that shows up as dark urine.
The important part: this is theoretical, based only on test-tube work, not on people. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cinnamon capsules are a different story, and cassia also carries coumarin that can stress the liver. Before adding a cinnamon supplement, run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Lovastatin page
“Lovastatin (Mevacor) lowers cholesterol, and the liver clears it through an enzyme called CYP3A4, which is where most of these 184 supplements collide with it. This list deserves careful attention.”

About Padang Cassia
What is Padang Cassia?
- Adding flavor to food
- Digestive upset
- Blood sugar support
- Antimicrobial purposes
- Antioxidant support
Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
About Lovastatin
What Is Lovastatin Used For?
Brand names: Mevacor, Altocor
Lovastatin is used to lower high LDL ("bad") cholesterol and total cholesterol in people whose levels have not improved enough with diet alone. It is also used to slow the buildup of plaque in the arteries (coronary atherosclerosis) in people who already have coronary heart disease.
In adults without existing heart disease but with high cholesterol and low HDL ("good") cholesterol, lovastatin tablets are approved to reduce the risk of heart attack, unstable angina, and the need for procedures to open blocked arteries. Lovastatin tablets are also approved for adolescents aged 10–17 with a specific inherited condition called heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (heFH), when diet changes alone haven't been enough.
