Here's the thing to keep in mind if you take nisoldipine (Sular) for blood pressure. Periwinkle contains a compound called vincamine that, at least in theory, can lower blood pressure on its own. Since nisoldipine already relaxes your blood vessels to bring numbers down, stacking the two could nudge your blood pressure lower than intended.

If that happens, you might notice dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, flushing, or feeling faint when you stand up. I'll be honest with you though, this concern is based on how these compounds behave in the lab and in animals, not on solid human studies, so it may not amount to much in practice. Still, before adding periwinkle, check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if your pressure already runs on the lower side.

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is a flowering plant whose alkaloids are the source of vinpocetine, a compound marketed for memory and brain circulation. Evidence in humans is limited and mixed, and the plant contains potent compounds that can be toxic in larger amounts, so it should be used only with professional guidance. A closely related plant, Madagascar periwinkle, is the source of important cancer chemotherapy drugs but is not safe to use as a home remedy.
