Here's the thing to keep in mind if you're using inhaled treprostinil (Tyvaso) for your lung-related high blood pressure. Treprostinil is already a vasodilator, meaning it relaxes and widens blood vessels. Periwinkle contains vincamine, which may also lower blood pressure. So on paper, layering the two could nudge your blood pressure down a little more than expected, potentially bringing on lightheadedness, dizziness, flushing, headache, or feeling faint when you stand up.

I want to be honest about the strength of this one: it's based on how these compounds behave in theory and in lab work, not on solid human studies. Treprostinil isn't a prodrug, so this is about added blood-pressure lowering, not changed activation. Still, before adding any periwinkle product, please check with your pharmacist or your PAH specialist first.

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is a flowering plant whose alkaloids are the source of vinpocetine, a compound marketed for memory and brain circulation. Evidence in humans is limited and mixed, and the plant contains potent compounds that can be toxic in larger amounts, so it should be used only with professional guidance. A closely related plant, Madagascar periwinkle, is the source of important cancer chemotherapy drugs but is not safe to use as a home remedy.

What Is Treprostinil Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand name: Tyvaso

Treprostinil oral inhalation is used to treat two serious lung conditions that raise pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs. It helps improve how much physical activity you can do.

Tyvaso inhalation solution and Tyvaso DPI are both indicated to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH; WHO Group 1) and pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD; WHO Group 3). Clinical studies establishing effectiveness in PAH primarily included patients with moderate symptoms (NYHA Class III) whose PAH was idiopathic, heritable, or related to connective tissue disease. Studies in PH-ILD primarily included patients with idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema, or connective tissue disease-related lung disease.
