Why this applies to Flutamide

Flutamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Sulforaphane interacts with.

Theoretically, sulforaphane might alter the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Animal and in vitro research shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP1A2 enzyme activity. However, its precursor glucoraphanin also appears to increase the expression of the CYP1A2 enzyme, which could lead to increased metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates. These effects have not been reported in humans.

Here's the situation with flutamide (Eulexin) and sulforaphane. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help process flutamide. In test tube and animal studies, sulforaphane can block that enzyme, which in theory could let flutamide build up a bit higher. That might mean more of its usual side effects, like nausea, diarrhea, hot flashes, or changes in liver tests. Interestingly, a related broccoli compound may push the enzyme the other way, so the net effect is genuinely unclear.

The big thing to know: this hasn't actually been seen in people, and it comes from lab data only. Eating broccoli with dinner is very unlikely to matter. If you're considering a concentrated sulforaphane supplement, just run it by your oncology pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear flutamide. In lab and animal studies, sulforaphane appears to slow that enzyme down. If that held true in people, flutamide could build up a bit more than expected, which in theory might mean stronger effects and a higher chance of side effects like nausea, diarrhea, hot flashes, or stress on the liver (something already watched closely with this medicine).

I want to be honest about the strength here. This interaction has only been seen in test tubes and animals, not in real patients, so it's theoretical. The broccoli on your dinner plate almost certainly isn't a concern. A concentrated sulforaphane supplement is a different story, so please run that by your oncology team or pharmacist before starting one.

What Is Flutamide Used For?

Brand names: Eulexin, Euflex

Eulexin (flutamide) capsules are used to treat prostate cancer in men. They are always used together with an LHRH agonist (a hormone-lowering injection), never alone.

Eulexin is indicated for two stages of prostate cancer: locally confined Stage B2-C prostate cancer (used alongside goserelin acetate and radiation therapy, starting eight weeks before radiation begins) and Stage D2 metastatic prostate cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the prostate, taken with an LHRH agonist until the disease progresses).
