Theanine and Naratriptan

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

SEROTONERGIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Naratriptan

Naratriptan falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Theanine interacts with.

Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: pairing theanine with your migraine medicine naratriptan (Amerge) is considered a very minor concern. Naratriptan works on serotonin pathways to help shut down a migraine, and theanine is thought to gently nudge brain messengers like serotonin too. On paper, two things that touch serotonin could add up.

But honestly, the evidence here is weak and conflicting. Some studies say theanine raises serotonin, others say it lowers it, and there are no reported cases of theanine causing serotonin-related problems. So this is largely theoretical. If you ever notice things like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, or confusion, that's worth a call to your doctor. Just let your pharmacist know you take both so they can keep an eye out.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Naratriptan page

“Naratriptan (Amerge) treats migraines by acting on serotonin receptors, so it matters that 20 of the 50 supplements flagged for it can also push serotonin activity higher, raising the risk of serotonin syndrome, a dangerous overload. This is a list to approach with real caution, not a quick skim.”

About Theanine

What is Theanine?

Theanine
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Relaxation and calm
  • Sleep support
  • Focus and cognitive function

Theanine (usually L-theanine) is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves that many people take to feel calmer and less stressed without strong drowsiness. Early research suggests it may help with relaxation and stress, but evidence for most uses is still limited. It appears generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
