Phenelzine Sulfate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Theanine interacts with.

Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.

Here's the gist with phenelzine (Nardil) and theanine. On paper, theanine may nudge up calming brain chemicals like GABA, and a few people in studies noticed mild drowsiness. Phenelzine itself can already make you feel sleepy, lightheaded, or foggy, so stacking the two could add to that calming effect. This is only a theoretical concern based on how each works, and it's rated minor and unlikely, so for most people it won't be a big deal.

That said, phenelzine is a tricky MAOI with serious food and drug cautions of its own. I'd loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding theanine, and if you do try it, go easy until you see how you feel, especially with driving.

Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.

Here's the situation with theanine and Nardil (phenelzine). Phenelzine is an MAOI, which means it strongly raises levels of brain chemicals like serotonin. Theanine may nudge serotonin too, though the studies are honestly all over the map. Some show a small bump, some show a dip, and there are no real-world reports of theanine triggering serotonin syndrome.

So on paper, the theoretical worry is stacking two things that touch serotonin, with side effects like agitation, fast heartbeat, sweating, or shakiness. In practice this is rated minor and unlikely, and the evidence is weak. Still, because phenelzine is a serious drug with many interactions, please run theanine by your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

What Is Phenelzine Used For?

Brand name: Nardil

Phenelzine is used to treat depression — specifically the types described as atypical, nonendogenous, or neurotic depression. This often includes people who have a mix of anxiety and depression, or who have phobic or hypochondriacal features (strong fears about illness or physical symptoms).

It is generally not the first antidepressant a doctor will try. It is best suited for patients who have already tried other antidepressants without enough relief. There is less evidence supporting its use in severe depression with classic biological features (called endogenous depression).
