Isocarboxazid falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Theanine interacts with.

Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.

Here's the honest picture with theanine and isocarboxazid (Marplan). Marplan is a powerful MAO inhibitor, meaning it blocks the enzyme that normally breaks down serotonin and similar brain chemicals. Because of that, anything that might nudge serotonin upward gets extra attention with this medicine. Theanine is thought to influence serotonin, but studies are genuinely mixed, with some showing a small rise and others a drop. So far there are no reported cases of theanine triggering serotonin-related problems.

The concern would be a rare event called serotonin syndrome (agitation, sweating, racing heart, shivering, confusion). The risk here looks low and is mostly theoretical, but with an MAOI on board it's worth a quick check. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding theanine.

What Is Isocarboxazid Used For?

Brand name: Marplan

Marplan (isocarboxazid) is indicated for the treatment of depression — specifically, major depressive disorder. Because it carries serious risks, it is not a first-choice antidepressant. Marplan is generally reserved for patients who have not responded adequately to other antidepressants.

Clinical trials showed Marplan to be effective in adult outpatients with major depressive disorder, including those whose depression was accompanied by anxiety symptoms such as panic or phobias. Marplan is not approved for use in children or adolescents.
