Here's the honest picture on combining theanine with sertraline (Zoloft). Sertraline raises serotonin to help with mood and anxiety. Theanine is thought to nudge brain chemicals like serotonin too, but the research is genuinely mixed: some studies say it raises serotonin, others say it lowers it. Because of that, there's a theoretical worry it could add to sertraline's serotonin effects.

In practice, this is rated minor and unlikely, and there are no real-world reports of theanine triggering serotonin-related problems. Just keep a casual eye out for things like jitteriness, a racing heart, sweating, shakiness, or feeling agitated, especially when starting. If anything like that shows up, give your pharmacist or doctor a call before changing anything.

Theanine (usually L-theanine) is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves that many people take to feel calmer and less stressed without strong drowsiness. Early research suggests it may help with relaxation and stress, but evidence for most uses is still limited. It appears generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

What Is Sertraline Used For?

Brand name: Zoloft

Sertraline treats a range of mental health conditions. All formulations are approved for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The oral solution (including Zoloft oral solution) and several tablet formulations are also approved for panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

For OCD specifically, the capsule formulations and some tablet products are approved for use in adults and children aged 6 and older. Sertraline hydrochloride tablets (plain, not film-coated) are approved for OCD in pediatric patients as well. However, sertraline is not approved for major depressive disorder in children — only in adults.
