Krill Oil Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Onnit
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Krill Oil against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Krill Oil by Onnit
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Onnit Krill Oil contains five active ingredients: krill oil itself (a source of omega-3 fatty acids), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), phospholipids, and astaxanthin. The krill oil and its omega-3 components are the primary active ingredients; astaxanthin is a naturally occurring pigment that adds antioxidant properties.
The capsules also contain gelatin, ethyl vanillin, glycerin, and purified water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
The evidence we hold supports krill oil as possibly effective for dry eye symptoms. For other uses — including aging skin, Alzheimer disease, cancer prevention, high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), and cognitive function — the data is insufficient to establish whether it works.
Astaxanthin similarly lacks established evidence for age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, or carpal tunnel syndrome.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Krill oil is generally well tolerated at doses up to 4 grams daily, but gastrointestinal side effects are common: bloating, decreased appetite, diarrhea, fishy burps, flatulence, heartburn, nausea, and stomach discomfort are the most frequent. Headache, tiredness, and dizziness have been reported rarely.
These effects tend to be milder with krill oil than with fish oil. Avoid this product if you have a shellfish allergy, and use caution if you have a bleeding disorder.
There isn't enough safety data to know whether it's safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding — talk with your doctor before using either time. Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited.
Common side effects include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools. There isn't enough safety data for astaxanthin during pregnancy or breastfeeding; the safety information advises against use both times.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Onnit Krill Oil, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (moderate severity risk of bleeding), diabetes medications (moderate risk of low blood sugar), or drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes in your liver (moderate risk that the drug won't work as well). No interactions are documented for the other ingredients we could not check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Krill Oil is worth considering if you have dry eye symptoms and want an omega-3 option. However, if you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or drugs metabolized by your liver's CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 systems, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist first — interactions are possible.
Expect some digestive side effects (fishy burps, bloating, loose stools), and avoid it if you're allergic to shellfish or have a bleeding disorder. Talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist before you start, especially if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Krill Oil by Onnit Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Onnit Krill Oil has documented interactions with several medication types.
Through its krill oil and astaxanthin content, the most serious concern is a moderate-severity risk: krill oil may increase bleeding risk if you're taking blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (such as warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel). The omega-3 fatty acids in krill oil can inhibit platelet aggregation, especially at high doses.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Krill oil also carries a moderate-severity interaction with diabetes medications. Some research suggests krill oil might lower blood sugar, which could raise the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if combined with antidiabetes drugs — though one small study in type 2 diabetes patients found no effect on blood glucose.
Astaxanthin (a pigment in this product) may theoretically decrease how your liver processes certain medications metabolized by the CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 enzyme systems — both moderate-severity interactions. This effect hasn't been confirmed in humans, only in lab studies, but affected drugs include some statins, immunosuppressants, and others.
We could not check three other ingredients: eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, and phospholipids.
Additionally, use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact drugs. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or any prescription drug, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product.

For each ingredient in Krill Oil with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Astaxanthin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, DHA may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Although some clinical evidence suggests that DHA might reduce collagen-stimulated platelet aggregation and thromboxane release, most clinical evidence suggests that DHA alone does not affect blood clotting. However, theoretically, when given in combination with EPA as fish oil, concomitant use with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (including aspirin) might increase risk of bleeding.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antidiabetes drugs might reduce the effects of these medications.
In people with type 2 diabetes, including those taking oral hypoglycemic medications, DHA seems to increase fasting blood glucose levels.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Fish oils containing DHA can lower blood pressure and might have additive effects in patients treated with antihypertensives; use with caution.
Krill Oil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, krill oil may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Taking high doses of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can modestly decrease platelet aggregation. Since krill oil also contains these fatty acids, taking high doses of krill oil might also inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, taking high doses of krill oil with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might increase the risk of bleeding. However, the omega-3 content of krill oil is much lower than that of fish oil.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking krill oil with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research in animals and humans shows that krill oil might lower blood glucose levels. However, a small study shows that taking krill oil does not reduce blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, most of whom were taking antidiabetes drugs.
