Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Surge 2.0 contains 31 ingredients, of which the active ones are amino acids, energy and performance compounds, and botanical extracts. The amino acids include L-glutamine, L-leucine, L-isoleucine, L-valine, L-histidine, L-arginine, taurine, and L-citrulline DL malate—the building blocks your muscles use.
You'll also find three forms of creatine (creatine HCl, creatine monohydrate, and creatine MagnaPower) to support muscle performance, plus beta-alanine (CarnoSyn brand), caffeine from two sources, agmatine sulfate, and huperzine A. The formula is rounded out with amla extract, N-acetyl L-tyrosine, L-norvaline, synephrine HCl, kola nut powder, rutaecarpine, and sodium.
The remaining ingredients are inactive additives—flavoring, sweeteners, and anti-caking agents.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Evidence for most of these ingredients comes in pieces. Creatine (in all three forms here) is Possibly Effective for muscle strength and athletic performance, and for sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss).
L-glutamine is Effective for sickle cell disease and Possibly Effective for post-surgery recovery and critical illness. Caffeine is Likely Effective for mental alertness and athletic performance, and Effective for neonatal apnea.
L-arginine, taurine, L-citrulline, and beta-alanine all show Possibly Effective ratings for athletic performance, though many other proposed uses don't yet have strong evidence. Amla extract (Indian gooseberry) is Possibly Effective for GERD and high cholesterol.
For many conditions—like cognitive function, anxiety, autism, and Alzheimer disease—the evidence we hold is either insufficient or not rated. Histidine, agmatine, and huperzine A have insufficient evidence for most uses claimed online.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Most ingredients are generally well tolerated in healthy adults at typical doses. Glutamine commonly causes belching, bloating, gas, and nausea—especially at high doses.
Creatine's most common side effects are dehydration, diarrhea, muscle cramps, and water retention; rarely, case reports mention kidney issues, though large studies haven't confirmed this. Caffeine causes anxiety, jitteriness, insomnia, and nausea, and at high doses can raise blood pressure.
L-arginine can lower blood pressure and cause abdominal pain, bloating, and nausea. Beta-alanine causes a harmless but often unwelcome tingling sensation on the skin.
Taurine is generally well tolerated, though constipation, diarrhea, and heartburn occur. L-citrulline may cause gastrointestinal discomfort or heartburn.
People with kidney disease should be cautious with creatine and glutamine. Huperzine A is a pharmacologically active compound that causes dose-dependent cholinergic side effects like blurred vision, constipation, diarrhea, and nausea.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding safety data are limited for most ingredients: glutamine and taurine are rated Likely Safe, but creatine, beta-alanine, L-arginine, L-citrulline, agmatine, and huperzine A lack sufficient safety data, so those should be avoided or used only under medical guidance. Caffeine carries a caution for pregnancy; ask your doctor about safe limits.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Check before taking if you use ephedrine or ephedrine-containing products—this is a Major interaction with caffeine in this formula and poses serious cardiovascular risk. Also double-check anticonvulsants (seizure medications), blood pressure medications, diabetes medications, blood thinners, potassium-sparing diuretics, lithium, ACE inhibitors or ARBs, and psychiatric medications like clozapine.
No interactions are documented for the ingredients we could not check: L-leucine, L-isoleucine, L-valine, N-acetyl L-tyrosine, Kola nut powder, rutaecarpine, L-norvaline, synephrine HCl, and maltodextrin.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a multi-ingredient sports supplement aimed at muscle performance and energy—not a casual product. If you take any blood pressure medication, diabetes drug, seizure medication, blood thinner, or heart medication, you must check your specific drugs with the tool here before using it, especially because of caffeine and sodium.
The product is generally tolerable for healthy adults, but people with kidney disease, bipolar disorder, or anxiety should talk to their pharmacist or doctor first. Don't combine this with ephedrine or ephedrine-containing products under any circumstances.

Sodium in this product interacts Moderately with antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications), corticosteroids, lithium, and several others by affecting how your body handles sodium levels or the drug's effectiveness. L-arginine interacts Moderately with blood pressure medications, potassium-sparing diuretics (water pills that save potassium), blood thinners, diabetes drugs, and ACE inhibitors or ARBs—all by adding to their effects or increasing potassium dangerously.
Caffeine also has Moderate interactions with anticonvulsants (seizure drugs), some psychiatric medications, and certain antibiotics. L-glutamine theoretically antagonizes anticonvulsants (seizure drugs), though this hasn't been reported in humans yet.
Taurine, L-citrulline, agmatine, and the Amla extract each carry additional Moderate interactions with blood pressure and diabetes medications or blood thinners.
Although some ingredients like creatine, histidine, and beta-alanine have no documented interactions, several others—L-leucine, L-isoleucine, L-valine, N-acetyl L-tyrosine, Kola nut powder, rutaecarpine, L-norvaline, and synephrine HCl—could not be checked against our data. For each ingredient in Surge 2.0 Fruit Punch with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
