Rasagiline falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Cola Nut interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of a hypertensive crisis.
Cola nut contains caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B in laboratory studies. Concomitant intake of large amounts of caffeine with MAOIs might precipitate a hypertensive crisis. In a case report, a patient that consumed 10-12 cups of caffeinated coffee and took the MAOI tranylcypromine presented with severe hypertension. Hypertension was resolved after the patient switched to drinking decaffeinated coffee.

Here's the gist with rasagiline (Azilect): it's an MAO-B inhibitor, and cola nut's main active ingredient is caffeine. The concern is that loading up on caffeine while taking an MAO inhibitor could, in theory, push your blood pressure up sharply. That can show up as a pounding headache, neck stiffness, a racing or thumping heartbeat, sweating, or feeling flushed and anxious.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical worry based mostly on lab studies and an old case report involving someone drinking 10 to 12 cups of coffee with a different MAOI. A normal soda or a cup of coffee is unlikely to cause trouble, but concentrated cola nut supplements stack up the caffeine fast. Before adding one, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Rasagiline Used For?

Brand name: Azilect

Rasagiline tablets — sold as Azilect, Rasagiline, and Rasagiline mesylate — are approved to treat Parkinson's disease (PD). They can be used on their own (monotherapy) or added to other Parkinson's medications, including levodopa.

When used alongside levodopa, rasagiline helps manage Parkinson's symptoms that are not fully controlled by levodopa alone. Your doctor may adjust your levodopa dose when the two are combined.
