Why this applies to Isocarboxazid

Isocarboxazid falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Cola Nut interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of a hypertensive crisis.
Cola nut contains caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B in laboratory studies. Concomitant intake of large amounts of caffeine with MAOIs might precipitate a hypertensive crisis. In a case report, a patient that consumed 10-12 cups of caffeinated coffee and took the MAOI tranylcypromine presented with severe hypertension. Hypertension was resolved after the patient switched to drinking decaffeinated coffee.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with Marplan (isocarboxazid): it's a true MAO inhibitor, and that whole class is famously sensitive to stimulants and certain foods. Cola nut is essentially a natural source of caffeine, and loading up on caffeine while you're on an MAOI could, in theory, push your blood pressure too high. We call that a hypertensive crisis, and the warning signs are a pounding headache, a racing or pounding heart, sweating, and feeling flushed.

I'll be honest with you, this is more of a theoretical caution drawn from how caffeine behaves, not a sure thing. A small amount probably won't cause trouble, but concentrated cola nut supplements or large doses are a different story. Before adding any caffeine-heavy supplement to your routine, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Isocarboxazid Used For?

Brand name: Marplan

Marplan (isocarboxazid) is indicated for the treatment of depression — specifically, major depressive disorder. Because it carries serious risks, it is not a first-choice antidepressant. Marplan is generally reserved for patients who have not responded adequately to other antidepressants.

Clinical trials showed Marplan to be effective in adult outpatients with major depressive disorder, including those whose depression was accompanied by anxiety symptoms such as panic or phobias. Marplan is not approved for use in children or adolescents.
