tipranavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to induce CYP1A2 activity. This effect has not been shown in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for tipranavir (Aptivus), your HIV protease inhibitor. The concern on file is that atractylodes might speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which can be one of the pathways that helps clear medications. If a drug gets cleared faster, its blood levels can drop, and lower tipranavir levels could in theory make it work less well against HIV.
Honestly though, this is very weak. The enzyme-revving effect only showed up in animals given high doses, and it has not been seen in people. Tipranavir is not a prodrug, and it actually relies more heavily on a different enzyme (CYP3A4). So real-world risk here is low. Since keeping HIV controlled matters so much, just run any new supplement past your pharmacist or doctor before starting.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down tipranavir (Aptivus). In animal studies, high doses of atractylodes slowed down a similar enzyme. If that same thing happened in people, it could in theory let tipranavir build up a bit higher than usual, which might mean more side effects like nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, or changes in your liver labs.
Here's the honest part: this is only a theoretical concern based on lab and animal work, and it hasn't been shown in humans. So it's very likely a minor issue. Still, because keeping HIV medicines at steady, reliable levels really matters, I'd run any atractylodes product past your pharmacist or HIV provider before starting it.

What Is Tipranavir Used For?
Brand name: Aptivus
Aptivus (tipranavir) is used to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in pediatric patients weighing at least 36 kg (about 79 lbs). It is specifically for people who have already tried other HIV treatments and whose virus has become resistant to more than one protease inhibitor. It is always taken together with a low dose of ritonavir and with other HIV medications.
Aptivus is not recommended for people who have never taken HIV treatment before (treatment-naïve patients). Using tipranavir alongside additional active HIV drugs improves the chances of it working well.
