Zileuton falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Bacopa interacts with.

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP1A2 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence shows that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP1A2, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to help clear zileuton. In some lab tests, bacopa appears to slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, zileuton could build up a little more than expected, which might mean a higher chance of its usual side effects like nausea, stomach upset, headache, or changes in liver tests.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. The evidence comes only from test tube and animal studies, and even those results disagree. There's no good proof it causes problems in people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since zileuton already needs liver monitoring, it's worth mentioning bacopa to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the short version: your asthma medicine zileuton is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In lab dishes, bacopa has shown a possible ability to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in your body, zileuton could build up a bit more than usual, which might mean stronger effects and a higher chance of side effects like nausea, stomach upset, headache, or stress on the liver (zileuton already requires liver monitoring).

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies. It is generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.

What Is Zileuton Used For?

Brand names: Zyflo, Zyflo CR

Zileuton is used for the ongoing prevention and treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is a maintenance medicine — meaning it is taken regularly to keep asthma under control, not to stop an asthma attack once it has started.

Zyflo (the tablet form) and zileuton extended-release tablets are both approved for this same purpose. Neither form should be used to treat a sudden asthma attack. However, both can be continued during a flare-up of asthma while you also use your rescue inhaler.
