Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Aspirin, Aluminum Hydroxide, Codeine Phosphate, Magnesium Hydroxide
Aspirin, Aluminum Hydroxide, Codeine Phosphate, Magnesium Hydroxide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Cajeput Oil interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
The piece to focus on here is the codeine in this combination product. Codeine is a bit unusual: it does not do much on its own. Your body has to convert it into morphine using an enzyme called CYP2D6, and that morphine is what actually relieves pain and calms a cough. Cajeput oil may gently slow that same enzyme down.
So if cajeput partly blocks CYP2D6, your body could make less morphine from the codeine, meaning you might get weaker pain relief. The good news is this concern comes only from lab research, not from people, and the effect was modest (around 30 percent). The aspirin, aluminum hydroxide, and magnesium hydroxide parts are not affected. Still, before using cajeput oil, check with your pharmacist or doctor.
