Metformin XR falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Cajeput Oil interacts with.

Animal studies suggest that cajeput oil might have hypoglycemic effects. Theoretically, taking cajeput oil with antidiabetes drugs could increase the risk for additive hypoglycemia. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, and others.

Here's the basic idea: in animal studies, cajeput oil seemed to nudge blood sugar a little lower on its own. Metformin XR already works to bring your glucose down, so the worry is that the two together could add up and push your sugar lower than intended. If that happened, you might feel shaky, sweaty, lightheaded, irritable, or unusually hungry.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes from lab and animal work, not real people, so the actual risk for someone using diluted cajeput oil on the skin or by inhaling it is probably small. Metformin alone rarely causes true low blood sugar anyway. Still, if you decide to use cajeput oil, keep an eye on your readings and check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.
