Cajeput Oil and Theophylline

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Theophylline and Cajeput Oil in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Theophylline

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Theophylline is filed under 6 classifications — including methylxanthines, cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) substrates, cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) substrates. Cajeput Oil has documented interactions with 2 drug classes — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate) and cytochrome p450 2d6 (cyp2d6) substrates (moderate) — and none of Theophylline’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What Theophylline’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Cajeput Oil. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Theophylline’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you take both. 9 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Severe muscle breakdown Worth acting on
  • Trouble passing urine Worth acting on
  • Low potassium Worth acting on
  • High blood sugar Worth acting on
  • An irregular heartbeat Worth acting on
  • Confusion Worth acting on
  • Seizures Worth acting on
  • A severe allergic reaction Worth acting on
  • Hives Worth acting on
  • Heartburn

Showing the 10 most notable of 25 label-listed effects — ranked by how unusual each one is across medicines generally, with serious effects weighted up.

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Theophylline. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 12,164 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Theophylline that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Cajeput Oil’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Cajeput Oil side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Cajeput Oil has no side effects.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Theophylline

This page covers Cajeput Oil only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Theophylline page lists 126 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Ephedra (major), Sida Cordifolia (major), Adrafinil (moderate) and African Wild Potato (moderate).

By severity: 3 major · 89 moderate · 34 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Theophylline page

“Stop ephedra before anything else if you take theophylline (Theo-Dur, Slo-Bid, and others) for asthma or COPD. Both are stimulants, and together they raise the risk of serious heart and nervous system effects; Sida cordifolia, an herb that contains ephedrine, carries the same major rating.”

About Cajeput Oil

What is Cajeput Oil?

Cajeput Oil
  • Muscle and joint aches
  • Cough and congestion
  • Minor skin irritation
  • Insect repellent
  • Aromatherapy

Cajeput oil is an aromatic essential oil traditionally used for aches, congestion, and minor skin complaints, but solid human evidence for these uses is limited. Like other essential oils, it should never be swallowed and should be diluted before applying to skin; consult a pharmacist or doctor before use, especially in children, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Melaleuca cajuputi · Myrtaceae · Essential oil distilled from the leaves and twigs · Essential oil, diluted topical rubs, inhalants/balms, aromatherapy blends

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Cajeput Oil is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Cajeput Oil record says about it on its own.

Cajeput Oil: dosing

There is no official, standardized dose for cajeput oil, and no proven safe amount for taking it internally. For topical or aromatherapy use, the general practice is to dilute a small amount of the essential oil in a carrier oil before applying to the skin.Because products differ in strength, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed them.
