Docetaxel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Danshen might alter the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.

Here's the situation with these two. Your body clears docetaxel using a liver and gut enzyme called CYP3A4, and Danshen can nudge that enzyme in either direction. When Danshen is taken steadily for a week or two, it tends to speed up CYP3A4, which could clear docetaxel faster and possibly make your chemo less effective. But a single recent dose of Danshen does the opposite, slowing clearance and letting more drug build up. Higher levels could mean worse side effects like low blood counts, infections, mouth sores, or nerve tingling.

Because docetaxel is serious chemotherapy where dosing is carefully controlled, please don't add Danshen without telling your oncologist or pharmacist first. The evidence here is early and a bit mixed, but with cancer treatment it's worth being cautious.

What Is Docetaxel Injection Used For?

Brand name: Taxotere

Docetaxel Injection is used to treat a number of serious cancers. Beizray (docetaxel injection) is approved as a single agent for locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer after prior chemotherapy has stopped working, and in combination with doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide as adjuvant (after-surgery) treatment for operable node-positive breast cancer. It is also used as a single agent for locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after platinum-based chemotherapy has failed, and with cisplatin for chemotherapy-naive advanced NSCLC.

Beizray is used with prednisone for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. It is also used with cisplatin and fluorouracil for advanced gastric adenocarcinoma (including gastroesophageal junction cancer) in patients who have not received prior chemotherapy for advanced disease, and for induction treatment of locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN).
