Danshen + Amlodipine, Celecoxib
Amlodipine, Celecoxib brand name: Consensi.
Amlodipine, Celecoxib falls into 4 drug categories that Danshen can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, taking danshen with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.

These two interact in 4 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 4 Interactions?
Danshen interacts with whole categories of medication. Amlodipine, Celecoxib falls into 4 of those categories, so it can interact with Danshen in 4 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
1 of 4Why this applies to Amlodipine, Celecoxib
Amlodipine, Celecoxib falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Danshen interacts with.
Animal research suggests that danshen can produce dose-dependent hypotensive effects. Furthermore, concomitant use with captopril appears to potentiate this effect.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Consensi is a combo pill: amlodipine lowers blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels, and celecoxib is an anti-inflammatory for pain. The piece that matters here is the amlodipine. Danshen itself appears to gently lower blood pressure too, at least in lab and animal studies. So stacking the two could add up and push your pressure too low.
If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or get a headache, especially when you stand up quickly. Keep in mind this is theoretical, based on animal data, not strong human studies, so it's a caution rather than a red alert. Please don't change anything on your own. Just check in with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Danshen.

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
2 of 4Amlodipine, Celecoxib also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that various constituents of danshen inhibit the activity of CYP2C9. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Consensi is a combo pill that pairs amlodipine (a blood pressure medicine) with celecoxib (an anti-inflammatory pain reliever). The celecoxib part is cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In test-tube studies, compounds in Danshen seem to slow that enzyme down, which could let celecoxib build up a bit in your system.
If that happened, you might notice more of celecoxib's usual side effects, like stomach upset, fluid retention, higher blood pressure, or, less often, kidney strain. Here's the honest part: this is only seen in lab studies and hasn't actually been reported in real people, so it's theoretical. Danshen may also affect blood clotting on its own. Before mixing them, please check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
3 of 4Amlodipine, Celecoxib also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your Consensi combines two medicines: amlodipine for blood pressure and celecoxib for pain and inflammation. Both are partly broken down by a liver and gut enzyme called CYP3A4, and Danshen can nudge that enzyme either way. With regular daily use over a week or two, Danshen seems to speed up clearance, which could weaken these drugs (your blood pressure might creep up, or your pain relief might fade). A single dose, oddly, may do the opposite and raise levels for a short time, which could mean more swelling in the ankles, dizziness, or stomach upset.
This is based on limited human research, so it's a real but unpredictable effect. Neither drug is a prodrug, so the direction follows the enzyme. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

AMLODIPINE (Norvasc)
4 of 4In animal research, taking danshen orally in combination with amlodipine reduced blood levels of amlodipine by about 52%. This may have been due to induction of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) by danshen, which has been demonstrated in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your Consensi tablet pairs amlodipine (a blood pressure medicine) with celecoxib (an anti-inflammatory). The concern here is mainly with the amlodipine part. Your body clears amlodipine using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and Danshen may speed that enzyme up. If amlodipine gets cleared faster, there's less of it around to do its job, so your blood pressure could creep back up.
Here's the reassuring part: this is based only on lab and animal studies, where Danshen lowered amlodipine levels by about half. It hasn't actually been reported in people yet, so it stays theoretical for now. Still, I wouldn't want your pressure quietly drifting upward. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Danshen, and keep an eye on your home blood pressure readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Amlodipine, Celecoxib page
“Grapefruit is the risk I would want a Consensi patient to grasp first. Consensi pairs amlodipine and celecoxib to treat high blood pressure and arthritis pain, and grapefruit blocks the enzyme that clears amlodipine, raising its levels.”

- Heart and circulation support
- Angina (chest pain)
- High blood pressure
- Anxiety and stress
- Liver health
Danshen is a root used in traditional Chinese medicine, mainly for heart and circulation problems.
