Theoretically, devil's claw might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.

Here's the wrinkle with Plavix (clopidogrel): it's a prodrug, meaning it arrives in your body inactive and has to be switched on by your liver enzymes before it can thin your blood and prevent clots. Devil's claw has shown, in lab dish studies only, that it may slow down one of those enzymes (CYP2C9). If that enzyme is partly blocked, your body could activate less clopidogrel, which in theory might make it work a little weaker at preventing clots.

I'll be straight with you, though: this is based on test-tube research, not real people, so it's quite uncertain. Still, because clopidogrel protects against strokes and heart attacks, I wouldn't add devil's claw without first checking with your pharmacist or doctor.

Here's the wrinkle with clopidogrel (Plavix): it's a prodrug, meaning it arrives in your body inactive and your liver has to switch it on before it can thin your blood and protect against clots. Several enzymes, including CYP3A4, help do that activating work. So if devil's claw slows CYP3A4, the worry isn't that clopidogrel piles up, it's that less of it gets turned on, which could blunt how well it prevents clots.

Now, the calm part: this is only seen in lab dishes, never confirmed in real people, so it's theoretical. Still, because clopidogrel is doing such an important job after a stent, stroke, or heart attack, I'd run devil's claw past your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

What Is Clopidogrel Used For?

Brand name: Plavix

Clopidogrel tablets are used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) — including unstable angina and non-ST-elevation or ST-elevation heart attacks — and in people with a history of recent heart attack, recent stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease. For ACS, it is typically given alongside aspirin.

It works by preventing platelets (blood cells that trigger clotting) from clumping together, which helps keep arteries open and lowers the chance of a dangerous clot forming.
