Montelukast Sodium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Devil's Claw interacts with.

Theoretically, devil's claw might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that devil's claw might inhibit CYP2C9, although this has not been reported in humans.

Here's the simple version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help break down montelukast (Singulair). In a test tube, devil's claw appeared to slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, montelukast could clear a little more slowly and build up, which in theory might lead to more of its usual side effects, things like headache, stomach upset, or feeling drowsy or unusually moody.

The big caveat is that this comes only from lab research, not from people, so it's mostly theoretical. Montelukast also isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't need that enzyme to start working. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since both can affect how you feel, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Montelukast Used For?

Brand name: Singulair

Montelukast is used for the long-term prevention and treatment of asthma in children and adults, and for preventing breathing problems triggered by exercise (exercise-induced bronchoconstriction). It is also used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and perennial allergic rhinitis (year-round nasal allergies). The age ranges covered depend on the specific product form — tablets, chewable tablets, and oral granules are each approved for different age groups.

For allergic rhinitis, montelukast should be reserved for people who haven't responded well to other treatments, because its potential mental health risks may outweigh the benefits when nasal allergy symptoms are mild and other options work. It is not a rescue treatment for sudden asthma attacks — always keep a fast-acting inhaler on hand.
