Telithromycin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Devil's Claw interacts with.

Theoretically, devil's claw might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that devil's claw might inhibit CYP3A4, although this has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Telithromycin (Ketek). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this antibiotic out of your system. Lab studies hint that devil's claw may slow that enzyme down a bit. If it does, telithromycin could build up higher than expected, which might mean more of its usual side effects like nausea, diarrhea, headache, or blurry vision. Telithromycin is not a prodrug, so blocking the enzyme would tend to strengthen its effects, not weaken them.

The good news: this is only a test-tube finding, never shown to actually happen in people, so the real risk is likely small. Still, since telithromycin already carries some heart and liver warnings, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

  • Telithromycin is used to treat certain types of pneumonia (an infection of the lungs) that is caused by bacteria. Telithromycin is in a class of medications called ketolide antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.
