Barbiturates like phenobarbital, butabarbital, and secobarbital already slow down your central nervous system. Since melatonin has its own mild calming, sleep-promoting effect, pairing the two could add up. The worry here is simply too much sedation, so you might feel extra drowsy, groggy, dizzy, or slow to think clearly the next day.

I want to be honest about the strength of this one: it is theoretical, based on how both work rather than strong studies. For many people a small bedtime dose of melatonin won't cause trouble, but with these particular drugs the stacked drowsiness can affect your balance and alertness. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially before driving.

The evidence is strongest for certain circadian (body-clock) disorders and is more mixed for everyday insomnia. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially for children or during pregnancy.
