Puravive contains Panax ginseng. Panax ginseng is thought to have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval, potentially increasing the risk of ventricular arrhythmias. However, research findings on this matter are conflicting. Here's the concern with pairing Puravive and your procainamide. Procainamide already affects something called the QT interval, which is basically the timing of your heart's electrical reset. Puravive contains Panax ginseng, and some short-term studies suggest ginseng can stretch out that QT timing a little too. Stack the two together and you may add to that effect, which in rare cases can trigger dangerous heart rhythms (the very thing your procainamide is meant to prevent).

Now, the evidence here is mixed and on the weaker side, and longer-term ginseng use hasn't shown the same change. Still, because procainamide is a drug where rhythm matters a great deal, I'd run Puravive past your pharmacist or doctor before starting it rather than guessing.

About Procainamide

What Is Procainamide Used For?

Brand names: Pronestyl, Procanbid, Procan SR, Procan, Pronestyl-SR

Procainamide hydrochloride injection is used to treat documented, life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias — most notably sustained ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm originating in the lower chambers of the heart). Because of its serious risk profile, it is reserved for situations where the benefit clearly outweighs the risk.

Procainamide is not recommended for minor or asymptomatic arrhythmias, and treatment should always be started in a hospital setting where close monitoring is possible. Antiarrhythmic drugs, including procainamide, have not been shown to improve survival in patients with arrhythmias that are not life-threatening.
