Puravive and Phenylephrine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

Stimulant Drugs

Why this applies to Phenylephrine

Phenylephrine falls under Stimulant Drugs — the group Puravive interacts with.

Puravive contains Panax ginseng. Panax ginseng has demonstrated stimulant effects in some studies, which could potentially heighten the effects of other stimulant drugs (source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8879982/). It is unlikely this would result in a significant risk of side effects, but it is important to be aware of.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for phenylephrine, the decongestant in products like Sudafed PE. Puravive contains Panax ginseng, which has shown mild stimulant-like effects in some studies. Since phenylephrine itself is a stimulant on your blood vessels, pairing the two could, in theory, nudge those stimulant effects a little higher. That might mean a slightly faster heartbeat, jitteriness, a bump in blood pressure, or trouble sleeping.

The good news: this interaction is rated minor and unlikely, and the evidence behind it is weak. For most people it won't cause a real problem. Still, if you have high blood pressure, heart trouble, or you already feel wired on decongestants, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Phenylephrine page

“If you take phenylephrine (Sudafed PE, Biorphen) for congestion, treat this list as one that needs real attention, since six of its 81 entries carry a major rating. Phenylephrine tightens blood vessels to clear your nose, and more than half of the interactions here come from stimulant ingredients, ephedra above all, that can push blood…”

About Puravive

What is Puravive?

Puravive
  • Weight management
  • Metabolism support
  • Energy levels
  • General wellness
  • Stress and brain health

Puravive is a branded, multi-ingredient capsule marketed mainly for weight loss by claiming to boost brown fat activity, but there is no published, independent clinical research showing the product itself works for this purpose. Some individual ingredients have been studied in laboratory or small human studies, but those results do not prove the finished blend is safe or effective. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have health conditions or take medications.

About Phenylephrine

What Is Phenylephrine Used For?

Brand names: Gilchew, AH Chew D, Gilchew IR, Sudafed PE, Biorphen

Phenylephrine is used in a number of different forms for different purposes. Intravenous (IV) phenylephrine — including products like Biorphen and Immphentiv — is given in hospital settings to raise blood pressure in adults when it drops dangerously low due to blood vessel widening (vasodilation), such as during anesthesia. Phenylephrine Hydrochloride Injection 10 mg/mL is also approved for use in septic shock (a life-threatening infection that causes a severe drop in blood pressure).

Nasal spray and drop products (such as Neo-Synephrine and Equate Nasal) temporarily relieve nasal congestion from colds, hay fever, or upper respiratory allergies. Ophthalmic (eye drop) solutions dilate the pupil for eye exams. Rectal suppository products (such as Preparation H and ReVIVOL-XR) help relieve itching, burning, and discomfort associated with hemorrhoids.
