Turmeric + Lovastatin
Lovastatin brand names: Mevacor, Altocor.
Lovastatin falls into 3 drug categories that Turmeric can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, turmeric might increase the risk of liver damage when taken with hepatotoxic drugs.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Lovastatin falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Turmeric in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
1 of 3Why this applies to Lovastatin
Lovastatin falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Turmeric interacts with.
There is concern that turmeric might cause hepatotoxicity, especially when highly bioavailable formulations are used in high doses.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with lovastatin and turmeric: both can be tough on your liver in certain situations. Lovastatin already carries a small risk of raising liver enzymes, and there have been scattered reports of turmeric (mostly the concentrated, high-absorption supplement forms) being linked to liver irritation too. Stacking two things that lean on the liver is the concern here.
I want to be honest about how shaky this evidence is. It's theoretical and based on anecdotal reports, not strong studies. Sprinkling turmeric on your food is very unlikely to be a problem. If you're taking high-dose curcumin capsules, that's where I'd pause. Watch for unusual fatigue, belly pain, dark urine, or yellowing of your skin or eyes, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Lovastatin also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro and animal research show that turmeric and its constituents curcumin and curcuminoids inhibit CYP3A4. Also, 8 case reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) adverse drug reaction database describe increased toxicity in patients taking turmeric and cancer medications that are CYP3A4 substrates, including everolimus, ruxolitinib, ibrutinib, and palbociclib, and bortezomib. In another case report, a transplant patient presented with acute nephrotoxicity and elevated tacrolimus levels after consuming turmeric powder at a dose of 15 or more spoonfuls daily for ten days prior. It was thought that turmeric increased levels of tacrolimus due to CYP3A4 inhibition.
Conversely, other in vitro research suggests that turmeric induces CYP3A4 activity, leading to reduced levels of CYP3A4 substrates. An animal model suggests that induction of CYP3A4 occurs after daily curcumin use for 1 week. However, the induction of CYP3A4 by turmeric has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with lovastatin: your body clears it using an enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab and animal studies suggest the curcumin in turmeric may slow that enzyme down. If that happens, lovastatin could build up a bit higher than expected, which can raise the odds of statin side effects like muscle aches, soreness, or weakness, and rarely more serious muscle problems.
I want to keep this in perspective. The evidence here is mostly test-tube and animal work, not solid human studies, and turmeric can actually push the enzyme the other way too. Sprinkling turmeric on your food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated curcumin capsules are where I'd be more careful. Before adding a daily supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP)
3 of 3Lovastatin also falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP).
In vitro research shows that the turmeric constituent curcumin competitively inhibits OATP4C1 transport. This transporter is expressed in the kidney and facilitates the renal excretion of certain drugs. Theoretically, taking turmeric might decrease renal excretion of OATP substrates.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for turmeric and your lovastatin: turmeric's main compound, curcumin, has been shown in lab dish studies to block a kidney transporter called OATP4C1. That transporter helps your body flush out certain drugs. If it's slowed down, the idea is that a little more of the drug could stick around than usual.
For lovastatin specifically, more drug hanging around could in theory mean a higher chance of statin side effects, like muscle aches, weakness, or in rare cases muscle breakdown. But I want to be honest with you: this is only test-tube evidence, not seen in real people, so it's far from certain. Cooking with turmeric is unlikely to matter. Before starting a concentrated curcumin supplement, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Turmeric
What is Turmeric?
- Joint pain and arthritis
- Inflammation
- Digestive upset
- Antioxidant support
- Skin conditions
Turmeric is a popular spice whose main active compounds, curcuminoids, are studied mostly for inflammation and joint pain. Some research is promising, but quality is mixed and curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own. For most people, dietary amounts are safe, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated supplements, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition.
About Lovastatin
What Is Lovastatin Used For?
Brand names: Mevacor, Altocor
Lovastatin is used to lower high LDL ("bad") cholesterol and total cholesterol in people whose levels have not improved enough with diet alone. It is also used to slow the buildup of plaque in the arteries (coronary atherosclerosis) in people who already have coronary heart disease.
In adults without existing heart disease but with high cholesterol and low HDL ("good") cholesterol, lovastatin tablets are approved to reduce the risk of heart attack, unstable angina, and the need for procedures to open blocked arteries. Lovastatin tablets are also approved for adolescents aged 10–17 with a specific inherited condition called heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (heFH), when diet changes alone haven't been enough.

Lovastatin Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Lovastatin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Turmeric — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
