This is likely due to at least one of the known constituents of muellein, triterpenoid saponins. However, the effects appear to be mild and results have been inconsistent. Extracts from different plant parts have been show to have varying anticoagulant strengths, with water-based ones being more potent than alcohol-based extracts.

Overview

Mullein is a tall flowering plant with soft, fuzzy leaves and a long stalk of yellow flowers that can grow up to about 2 meters high. It grows wild across many temperate and mountain regions of Europe, Asia, and North America, often in dry, sunny areas along roadsides and fields.

People have used mullein in folk medicine for hundreds of years, mainly for breathing and throat problems. The leaves and flowers are the parts most often used. They are commonly brewed into a tea, made into syrups or tinctures, or infused into oil that is dropped into the ear for earaches.

How it works

Mullein contains several plant compounds that may explain its traditional uses. These include mucilage (a slippery, gel-like substance), saponins, flavonoids, and iridoid glycosides such as aucubin.

The mucilage is thought to coat and soothe irritated tissues in the throat and airways, which is why mullein is used for coughs and sore throats. The flavonoids and other compounds have shown possible anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies. Keep in mind these mechanisms are mostly based on test-tube and animal research, and they have not been clearly confirmed in well-designed human trials.

Safety & precautions

Mullein is generally considered low-risk for short-term use in healthy adults when taken as a tea or labeled supplement. Still, because human safety studies are limited, it should be used with care.

The tiny hairs on mullein leaves can irritate the throat or skin in some people, so teas are usually strained well. People with allergies to plants in the same family may be more likely to react. Do not put any liquid, including mullein ear oil, into the ear if you have or suspect a ruptured eardrum, or if there is drainage or severe pain — see a healthcare provider instead.

For pregnancy and breastfeeding, there is not enough reliable safety information, so the safest choice is to avoid mullein. Children, older adults, and people with chronic health conditions should check with a pharmacist or doctor before using it.

Side effects

Mullein is usually well tolerated. Reported side effects are generally mild and may include throat or skin irritation (often from the plant's tiny hairs) and occasional stomach upset.

Allergic reactions are possible but uncommon. Stop using mullein and seek medical care if you notice signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, swelling, or trouble breathing. Because the seeds of the plant can be toxic, only use products made from the leaves and flowers from a reputable source.

Dosing

There is no official or standardized dose for mullein. The amount used varies widely between products and traditional recipes, such as teas, tinctures, capsules, and syrups.

The safest approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed the recommended amount. If you are unsure how much to take or whether mullein is appropriate for you, ask a pharmacist or doctor.
