Cladribine falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has demonstrated immunosuppressant activity in animal research. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), corticosteroids (glucocorticoids), and others.

Here is the honest picture with Cladribine (Mavenclad, Leustatin). This medicine works by lowering certain immune cells to calm your MS. Ceylon Leadwort contains plumbagin, which in lab and animal studies has shown its own immune-dampening effects. So the worry is simple: stacking two things that both quiet the immune system could push your defenses lower than intended, raising the chance of infections, fatigue, or other immune-related side effects.

I want to be straight with you, though, this is a theoretical concern. It comes from test-tube and animal data, not from people taking these two together. Even so, because Cladribine already affects your immune system in a serious way, I would not add Ceylon Leadwort without first checking with your neurologist or pharmacist.

Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain. Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy.

What Is Cladribine Used For?

Brand names: Leustatin, Mavenclad

Cladribine tablets (brand name Mavenclad) are used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adults — specifically relapsing-remitting MS and active secondary progressive MS. Because of its significant safety profile, it is generally reserved for patients who haven't responded well to, or can't tolerate, other MS medicines. It is not recommended for clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), a first episode that may or may not lead to MS.

Cladribine injection (given intravenously) is a separate product used to treat active hairy cell leukemia — a rare blood cancer — in patients who have clinically significant anemia, low white blood cell counts, low platelets, or disease-related symptoms.
