Why this applies to Triazolam

Triazolam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist for triazolam (Halcion): your body clears this sleep medicine using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Plumbagin, a compound in Ceylon Leadwort, has been shown to slow that same enzyme in lab studies. If it does the same thing in real people, triazolam could clear more slowly and build up in your system.

For a short-acting sleeping pill, that could mean more next-day grogginess, dizziness, confusion, or feeling unusually sedated. The catch is that this is only based on test-tube research, not actual reports in humans, so it's a theoretical concern rather than a proven one. Still, since triazolam is potent and sedating, I'd play it safe and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts. Triazolam tablets are approved for the short-term treatment of insomnia in adults. Treatment is generally intended for 7 to 10 days. Halcion (a brand of triazolam) is specifically indicated for this same short-term use in adults.

Using triazolam for more than 2 to 3 weeks requires a full re-evaluation by your doctor to rule out an underlying medical or psychiatric condition driving the sleep problem.
