Why this applies to Bupropion

Bupropion falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2B6 (CYP2B6) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 2B6 (CYP2B6) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6. Drugs that are metabolized by CYP2B6 include ketamine (Ketalar), phenobarbital, orphenadrine (Norflex), secobarbital (Seconal), and dexamethasone (Decadron).

Here's the gist with bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban): your liver relies on an enzyme called CYP2B6 to break it down. Ceylon Leadwort contains plumbagin, which in lab studies slowed that same enzyme. If that played out in the body, your bupropion could clear more slowly and build up, meaning a bit more drug hanging around than intended.

Why I'd pay attention: higher bupropion levels can bring on things like trouble sleeping, jitteriness, a racing heart, or a higher seizure risk. That said, this is purely theoretical right now, seen only in a test tube, never reported in real patients. So I'm flagging it, not alarming you. Before combining the two, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain. Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts. What Is Bupropion Used For?

Brand names: Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Zyban, Wellbutrin XL, Aplenzin, Forfivo XL

Bupropion is FDA-approved to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) — a form of clinical depression. Extended-release formulations (XL and hydrobromide versions, including Aplenzin) are also approved for the prevention of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), the pattern of depression that tends to arrive in autumn and winter.

Not all formulations share every indication. Aplenzin (bupropion hydrobromide extended-release) and bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets (XL) are indicated for both MDD and SAD. Bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets (SR) and bupropion hydrochloride immediate-release tablets are indicated for MDD only.
