Why this applies to Irinotecan

Irinotecan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the basic idea with irinotecan (Camptosar): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help process this chemotherapy drug. A compound in Ceylon Leadwort called plumbagin has been shown to slow down that enzyme in lab dishes. In theory, that could let more irinotecan build up in your body than expected, which may raise the risk of its tougher side effects, things like severe diarrhea, low blood counts, nausea, and a weakened immune system.

I want to be honest, though: this is based only on test-tube research, not real people, so we don't truly know how much it matters in the body. Since irinotecan is a serious cancer drug with a narrow safety margin, please don't add Ceylon Leadwort without first running it by your oncologist or pharmacist.
