Risperidone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), and others.

Here's the simple version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help break down risperidone. Plumbagin, a compound in Ceylon Leadwort, has been shown in lab studies to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, risperidone could build up a bit higher than usual, which might mean more of its typical side effects, like drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure when standing, restlessness, or muscle stiffness.

That said, I want to be honest about the evidence. This is based only on test-tube research, not on real people, so it's theoretical at this point. Still, since this involves a mental health medicine you don't want swinging around, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Ceylon Leadwort rather than starting it on your own.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist with Ceylon Leadwort and risperidone. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear risperidone out of your system. A compound in this plant, plumbagin, has been shown to slow that enzyme down, at least in lab dish studies. If that happened in a real person, more risperidone could hang around, which can mean stronger effects like drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure when standing, restlessness, or muscle stiffness.

The important part: this is only based on test-tube research, not actual reports in people, so the real-world risk is uncertain and likely small. Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain. Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts. What Is Risperidone Used For?

Brand names: Risperdal, Perseris

Risperidone is prescribed for three main conditions: schizophrenia (a disorder affecting how a person thinks, feels, and perceives reality), acute manic or mixed episodes in Bipolar I Disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder — including aggression, self-injury, temper tantrums, and rapid mood swings.

For bipolar mania, it can be used alone or alongside lithium or valproate. It is approved for use in both adults and certain age groups of children and adolescents, depending on the condition being treated.
