Moringa and Levothyroxine Sodium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

LEVOTHYROXINE (Synthroid, others)

Theoretically, moringa leaf can antagonize the effects of levothyroxine.
Animal research suggests that moringa aqueous leaf extract might reduce serum triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations by inhibiting the peripheral conversion of thyroxine (T4) to T3.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: levothyroxine is the T4 form of thyroid hormone, and your body has to convert some of it into the more active T3 to get the full effect. The concern with moringa is that, at least in animal studies, a concentrated leaf extract seemed to slow that T4-to-T3 conversion. In theory, that could blunt how well your levothyroxine works.

I'll be honest with you, this is weak, lab-and-animal level evidence, so I wouldn't panic. But if moringa did nudge things, you might notice low-thyroid symptoms creeping back, like fatigue, feeling cold, weight gain, or dry skin. Sprinkling moringa into food is unlikely to be a problem, while daily concentrated supplements are the bigger question mark. Loop in your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, and don't change your levothyroxine dose on your own.

  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).

About Moringa

What is Moringa?

  • Nutritional supplement
  • Blood sugar support
  • Cholesterol support
  • Inflammation
  • Skin conditions

Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.
