Moringa and Warfarin

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Moringa interacts with whole categories of medication. Warfarin falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Moringa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Warfarin

Warfarin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Moringa interacts with.

Theoretically, moringa might increase or decrease levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some in vitro research suggests that moringa inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). However, other in vitro research suggests that moringa extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes. A pharmacokinetic study in patients with HIV shows no change in the pharmacokinetics of nevirapine, which is partially metabolized by CYP3A4, when administered concomitantly with moringa leaf powder 1.85 grams daily for 14 days.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the honest picture with moringa and warfarin. The interaction we have on file is mostly theoretical, coming from lab and animal studies rather than real people. Some lab work hints that moringa might block the CYP3A4 enzyme (which could raise warfarin levels), while other lab work suggests it speeds that enzyme up (which could lower them). So we genuinely can't say for sure which direction it would go.

Why I still pay attention: warfarin is a narrow-window drug, so even small shifts matter. Too much raises bleeding risk (easy bruising, nosebleeds, blood in urine or stool), while too little risks clots. Cooking amounts of moringa likely won't matter, but concentrated supplements are a question mark. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, and keep up with your regular INR checks.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

Warfarin also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, moringa might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that moringa extract induces CYP1A2 enzymes.

Here's the short version on moringa and warfarin. In test-tube studies, moringa seemed to speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the routes your body uses to clear warfarin. If that happened in real life, your warfarin could get broken down a little faster, which might weaken its blood-thinning effect and, in theory, leave you slightly more prone to a clot.

Honestly, this is very early lab evidence, not something proven in people, so I wouldn't panic. But warfarin is a finicky drug where even small shifts can swing your INR. If you want to add a moringa supplement, loop in your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on your INR. An occasional culinary serving is far less concerning than concentrated daily capsules.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

About Moringa

What is Moringa?

  • Nutritional supplement
  • Blood sugar support
  • Cholesterol support
  • Inflammation
  • Skin conditions

Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.

About Warfarin

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand name: Warfarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
