Ostarine and Modafinil

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS

Why this applies to Modafinil

Modafinil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS — the group Ostarine interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of ostarine with CYP3A4 inducers could decrease the clinical effects of ostarine.
Ostarine is partially metabolized by CYP3A4. Clinical research shows that taking rifampin, a potent inducer of CYP3A4, reduces the maximum plasma concentration of ostarine by 23% and the area under the curve by 43%.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for these two: modafinil is one of those medicines that can gently speed up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Ostarine happens to be partly broken down by that same enzyme. So when modafinil revs up the enzyme, your body may clear ostarine a little faster, which could leave less of it around to do what people take it for. In other words, the concern runs against ostarine, not against your modafinil. Your narcolepsy or sleep-apnea treatment shouldn't be weakened by this.

Honestly though, this is mostly theoretical and pieced together from a study using a much stronger enzyme booster than modafinil. I'd point out the bigger issue: ostarine is an unapproved SARM tied to liver injury and isn't recommended at all. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything with modafinil.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).

About Ostarine

What is Ostarine?

  • Muscle building
  • Athletic performance
  • Fat loss / body recomposition
  • Bodybuilding cycles

Ostarine (also called MK-2866 or enobosarm) is an experimental, unapproved drug known as a SARM (selective androgen receptor modulator), not a true dietary supplement. It is not approved by the FDA, is banned in sports, and has been linked to liver injury and other serious harms, so it is not recommended for general use.

About Modafinil

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Brand names: Provigil, Sparlon, Alertec

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
