Treprostinil (Orenitram) is a medication used for pulmonary arterial hypertension. It works by relaxing and widening blood vessels in your lungs, but it can also lower your blood pressure throughout your body. Periwinkle contains a compound called vincamine that, in lab and animal studies, appears to widen blood vessels and lower blood pressure too.

So in theory, pairing the two could stack their effects and drop your blood pressure more than expected. That might leave you feeling dizzy, lightheaded, flushed, or faint, especially when you stand up. Keep in mind this concern is theoretical and based on how these compounds work, not on solid human studies. Still, since periwinkle itself can be risky, please run it by your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is a flowering plant whose alkaloids are the source of vinpocetine, a compound marketed for memory and brain circulation. Evidence in humans is limited and mixed, and the plant contains potent compounds that can be toxic in larger amounts, so it should be used only with professional guidance. A closely related plant, Madagascar periwinkle, is the source of important cancer chemotherapy drugs but is not safe to use as a home remedy.

About Treprostinil

What Is Treprostinil Used For?

Treprostinil treats pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH; WHO Group 1) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. Depending on the product and route, it is used to improve exercise ability, delay disease progression, or reduce symptoms tied to physical activity. Remodulin and treprostinil injection products are also indicated for patients who need to transition away from another PAH medicine called epoprostenol.

Tyvaso, Tyvaso DPI, and Yutrepia (inhaled forms) are additionally approved to treat pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD; WHO Group 3) — lung-pressure problems caused by scarring or inflammation in the lung tissue itself. Orenitram (extended-release oral tablet) is specifically indicated to delay disease progression and improve exercise capacity in PAH.
