GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS
Why this applies to Entacapone
Entacapone falls under GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.
In vitro, uva ursi extract appears to strongly inhibit UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 1A1 (UGT1A1). However, uva ursi extract does not appear to inhibit UGT1A1 in animal models. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for entacapone (Comtan), which you take alongside your levodopa/carbidopa to smooth out 'wearing-off' moments in Parkinson's. Your body clears entacapone partly through a process called glucuronidation. In a lab dish, uva ursi blocked one of those clearing enzymes (UGT1A1), so in theory entacapone could build up a bit and its effects, including loose stools, nausea, dizziness, or a harmless brownish-orange tint to your urine, might feel stronger.
That said, this is only a test-tube finding. Animal studies didn't show it, and it has never been reported in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Uva ursi is meant for short-term use anyway. Before adding it, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor so we can keep an eye on things.

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Uva Ursi
What is Uva Ursi?
- Urinary tract infections
- Urinary discomfort
- Mild diuretic
- Kidney stones
- Skin conditions
Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Entacapone
What Is Entacapone Used For?
Brand name: Comtan
Entacapone tablets are used as an add-on therapy — always taken together with levodopa and carbidopa — to treat end-of-dose 'wearing-off' in people with Parkinson's disease. 'Wearing-off' is when the benefit of a levodopa dose fades before the next dose is due, causing symptoms like stiffness or slowness to return.
Entacapone has no effect on Parkinson's disease on its own; it only works when combined with levodopa and carbidopa. Its effectiveness has not been thoroughly studied in people with Parkinson's disease who do not experience wearing-off.
