Midostaurin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Rydapt (midostaurin): your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medication. Lab studies suggest uva ursi may slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, midostaurin could build up more than expected, which might mean more of its usual side effects like nausea, mouth sores, low blood counts, fever, swelling, or fatigue.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is only seen in test-tube studies, not in actual people, so we really don't know how much it matters. Since midostaurin is a serious cancer medicine with careful dosing, I'd skip starting uva ursi on your own and run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Midostaurin Used For?

Brand name: Rydapt

  • Midostaurin is used with other chemotherapy drugs to treat certain types of acute myeloid leukemia (AML; a type of cancer of the white blood cells). Midostaurin is also used to certain types of mastocytosis (a blood disorder in which there are too many mast cells [a certain kind of white blood cell]). Midostaurin is in a class of medications called kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of the abnormal protein that signals cancer cells to multiply. This helps stop the spread of mast and cancer cells.
