Caffeine + Brexpiprazole

Brexpiprazole brand name: Rexulti.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Caffeine and Brexpiprazole in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Caffeine and Brexpiprazole

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Brexpiprazole and Caffeine in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Brexpiprazole

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Brexpiprazole is filed under 8 classifications — including dopamine agonists, antipsychotic drugs, serotonergic drugs. Caffeine has documented interactions with 41 drug classes — the most serious being ephedrine (major), adenosine (adenocard) (moderate) and anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (moderate) — and none of Brexpiprazole’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Caffeine and Brexpiprazole May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. 5 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

Caffeine in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy Possibly Safe

When used orally in amounts commonly found in foods. Intakes of caffeine should be monitored during pregnancy. Caffeine crosses the human placenta, but is not considered a teratogen. Fetal blood and tissue levels are similar to maternal concentrations. The use of caffeine during pregnancy is controversial; however, moderate consumption has not been associated with clinically important adverse fetal effects. In some studies consuming amounts over 200 mg daily is associated with a significantly increased risk of miscarriage. This increased risk seems to occur in those with genotypes that confer a slow rate of caffeine metabolism. According to a review by Health Canada, and a subsequent large meta-analysis conducted in the US, up to 300 mg daily can be consumed during pregnancy without an increased risk of spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, preterm birth, fetal growth retardation, or congenital malformations. However, observational research in a Norwegian cohort found that caffeine consumption is associated with a 16% increased odds of the baby being born small for gestational age when compared with no consumption. The same Norwegian cohort found that low to moderate caffeine consumption during pregnancy is not associated with changes in neurodevelopment in children up to 8 years of age. Advise patients to keep caffeine consumption below 300 mg daily during pregnancy. This is similar to the amount of caffeine in about 3 cups of coffee or tea.

Pregnancy Possibly Unsafe

When used orally in amounts over 300 mg daily. Caffeine crosses the placenta, producing fetal blood concentrations similar to maternal levels. Consumption of caffeine in amounts over 300 mg daily is associated with a significantly increased risk of miscarriage in some studies. Advise patients to keep caffeine consumption below 300 mg daily during pregnancy. This is similar to the amount of caffeine in about 3 cups of coffee or tea. Additionally, high doses of caffeine throughout pregnancy have resulted in symptoms of caffeine withdrawal in newborn infants. High doses of caffeine have also been associated with spontaneous abortion, premature delivery, and low birth weight. In a cohort of mother/infant pairs with a median maternal plasma caffeine level of 168.5 ng/mL (range 29.5-650.5 ng/mL) during pregnancy, birth weights and lengths were lower in the 4th quartile of caffeine intake compared with the 1st. By age 7, heights and weights were lower by 1.5 cm and 1.1 kg respectively. In another cohort of mother/infant pairs with higher maternal pregnancy plasma caffeine levels, median 625.5 ng/mL (range 86.2 to 1994.7 ng/mL), heights at age 8 were 2.2 cm lower, but there was no difference in weights.

Lactation Possibly Safe

When used orally in amounts commonly found in foods. Caffeine intake should be closely monitored while breast-feeding. During lactation, breast milk concentrations of caffeine are thought to be approximately 50% of serum concentrations and caffeine peaks in breastmilk approximately 1-2 hours after consumption.

Lactation Possibly Unsafe

When used orally in large amounts. Caffeine is excreted slowly in infants and may accumulate. Caffeine can cause sleep disturbances, irritability, and increased bowel activity in breast-fed infants exposed to caffeine.

What Brexpiprazole Is Prescribed For, and What Caffeine Has Been Studied For

These two come up together because they touch the same health topic — not because they do the same job. Brexpiprazole is a prescription medicine with approved uses on its FDA label. Caffeine is a supplement: what follows is what researchers have looked at it for, and how strong that evidence is.

Brexpiprazole is prescribed for: Brexpiprazole tablets are approved for two uses in adults: as an add-on (adjunctive) treatment alongside antidepressants for major depressive disorder (MDD), and as a treatment for schizophrenia. These uses apply to both the generic brexpiprazole tablets and Rexulti. Rexulti has one additional approved use: treating agitation associated with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease in adults. Rexulti is also approved for schizophrenia in adolescents ages 13 and older.

Note that Rexulti is not approved for dementia-related psychosis without agitation from Alzheimer's disease, and it is not meant to be used on an as-needed basis for Alzheimer's-related agitation.

Effectiveness ratings and the research summaries above are the verbatim record from the Natural Medicines database, which grades evidence from “Effective” down to “Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate”. A rating below the top of that scale means researchers have looked at it — not that it works, and never that it can stand in for a prescribed medicine. Do not stop or replace Brexpiprazole on your own; if you are taking Caffeine for the same health topic, tell your prescriber, especially if the medicine is being adjusted to a target.

About Caffeine

What is Caffeine?

  • Mental alertness and reducing fatigue
  • Improving athletic performance
  • Headache and migraine relief
  • Boosting focus and concentration
  • Weight loss aid

Caffeine is a natural stimulant found in coffee, tea, and many other plants and products. In moderate amounts it can boost alertness and reduce tiredness for most healthy adults, but too much can cause jitteriness, a racing heart, and sleep problems. Pregnant women and people with heart conditions or anxiety should be especially careful and check with a doctor or pharmacist.

Seeds, leaves, and beans of various plants (e.g., coffee, tea, cacao, guarana, kola) · Coffee, tea, energy drinks, sodas, tablets, capsules, pre-workout powders, gum

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Caffeine is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Caffeine record says about it on its own.

Caffeine: dosing

There is no single "correct" dose of caffeine, and the right amount depends on your age, health, and how sensitive you are. Many health authorities suggest that moderate daily intake is reasonable for most healthy adults, but individual limits vary widely. If you use a caffeine supplement, energy drink, or pre-workout powder, follow the directions on the product label and do not take more than recommended. Concentrated caffeine powders are especially dangerous because a small mistake can lead to a harmful overdose.Remember that caffeine adds up across coffee, tea, sodas, energy drinks, chocolate, and any supplements or medicines that contain it.

Taking Caffeine and Brexpiprazole Together: Common Questions

Is it safe to take Caffeine with Brexpiprazole?
We do not list a known interaction between Caffeine and Brexpiprazole. That does not guarantee the combination is risk-free, so confirm with your pharmacist or doctor — especially if you take other medications or have a health condition.
Do Caffeine and Brexpiprazole have any of the same side effects?
Yes — our sources link each of them separately to 10 of the same effects. That is not an interaction: neither changes how your body handles the other. It does mean that if one of those effects turns up, it can be harder to tell which one is behind it. They are listed on this page with the source behind each.
Are Caffeine and Brexpiprazole used for the same thing?
They overlap in purpose, which usually means the real question is whether you need both rather than whether they are safe together. This page lists the shared uses and how strong the evidence is for Caffeine in each. That is a conversation for your prescriber, especially if Brexpiprazole is being adjusted to a target.
