Why this applies to Buprenorphine/Naloxone

Buprenorphine/Naloxone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the basic idea with Suboxone and Ceylon Leadwort. The buprenorphine part of Suboxone is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. A compound in this plant, plumbagin, has been shown in lab dish studies to slow that enzyme down. If it did the same thing in your body, buprenorphine could build up a bit, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, constipation, or slowed breathing.

The important thing to know is that this has only been seen in test tube research, not in real people. So it's a theoretical concern, not something proven. Still, with an opioid medication I'd rather be cautious. Before adding Ceylon Leadwort, please run it by your pharmacist or the prescriber who manages your Suboxone.
