Why this applies to Chlordiazepoxide

Chlordiazepoxide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2. Some substrates of CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), zileuton (Zyflo), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.

Here's the gist for Librium (chlordiazepoxide). The plumbagin in Ceylon Leadwort has, in lab dishes, slowed down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which helps clear certain medications. If that same blocking happened in your body, your Librium might hang around longer and build up a bit, which could mean more drowsiness, dizziness, grogginess, or unsteadiness than usual.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is only a test-tube finding, and it has never actually been reported in a real person taking these together. So it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, since both can make you sleepy, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Chlordiazepoxide Used For?

Chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride capsules are used to manage anxiety disorders or for short-term relief of anxiety symptoms. They are also used to relieve withdrawal symptoms in acute alcoholism, and to reduce apprehension and anxiety before surgery.

Note that everyday stress and tension do not usually require an anxiety medication like this one. Long-term use beyond 4 months has not been well-studied, so your prescriber should periodically check whether it is still the right fit for you.
